Bryan Insurance Group, can trace its Blount County roots all the way back to 1921 with Gillespie Insurance Agency. Well known at that time, Gillespie would later become part of the Blazer Agency, run by Earl Blazer. Over the years, two other successful companies were serving customers in East Tennessee. In the 1950’s M.B. Crum, known as Major, founded Crum Insurance Agency. The story of Hitson Insurance began in Blount County in 1939. M.C. Hitson was the first local agent for StateFarm insurance in Maryville. His son, Charles, was an agent for Prudential insurance company in town, and both men established themselves as reputable agents in Blount County. In 1979, Gary Hitson (grandson of M.C., son of Charles, and now retired) decided to open his own insurance company, and that's when Hitson Insurance originally got its start.

In 2014, Matthew Bryan brought his expertise in the insurance industry and accomplished business background to the table, and went on to purchase Hitson Insurance in January 2016. In January of 2017, Hitson Insurance merged with Crum & Blazer, to become Hitson, Crum & Blazer Insurance, Inc. With a past history of working in this area since the early 1920s, a primary benefit of this merger is that the company provided expanded diversity of coverage options to best meet clients' changing needs.

The company is now Bryan Insurance Group, Inc., and in addition to the new name and identity, a new location was added in Farragut in order to better serve the needs of the local community. The company now serves more clients throughout East Tennessee, while upholding the same old-fashioned traditional values of honesty and integrity. The Bryan Insurance Group vision is to provide the best possible customer service to the community at the most affordable rates available. Their goal is to help every client they have, both business and personal, in every season of life and business.

Matthew Bryan
Principal Agent

  • Growing up in a family of radio broadcasters, it was understood that Matthew Bryan would at least give it a try. Though his personality and voice were fit for it, his entrepreneurial spirit couldn’t sit still. After earning his degree from East Tennessee State University in banking and finance, Matthew went to work for First Tennessee Bank and Merrill Lynch before finding his home base at Hitson, Crum & Blazer Insurance. His fervor for service means delivering fair and competitive prices and maintaining relationships with every client. Matthew married his wife, Alena, in 2005. They have two young children, Rhodes and Marley. Together they love traveling, tailgating and growing deep roots in East Tennessee.


Gary Hitson
Founder and Licensed Agent (Retired)

  • Now retired, Gary Hitson had a handful of rules that kept clients a priority, and it started with a simple one: return phone calls the same day. The second rule was to keep your appointments and always be on time. The rules may be old-fashioned, but they worked, even in this modern world. Though Gary is a third-generation insurance agent, he built Hitson, Crum & Blazer Insurance on his own after watching his grandfather and father succeed in national agencies. After spending one year in a national agency himself, Gary says “the light bulb went off,” and he decided to start his own business and go back to the basics of meeting the individual needs of each client and doing it with impeccable service. Gary’s vision and zeal carried him from selling non-standard auto and life insurance out of his home to establishing a hometown business that’s grown steadily since 1978.


Michele Self
Personal Lines Manager

  • Originally from Richmond, Indiana and moved in 1975 to Maryville, Tennessee.
  • Has been an insurance agent for 26 years.
  • Enjoys trips to the mountains and beaches with her daughter and son.
  • Loves being a MiMi to one sweet granddaughter.
